Sulfate Reducing Bacteria

Tests your Well or City Water for...

  • - Sulfate Reducing Bacteria

Sulfate reducing bacteria feed upon sulfur based compounds including sulfate, sulfite, elemental sulfur and thiosulfate. They produce hydrogen sulfide as a by-product, so the "rotten egg odor" is often an indication that these bacteria are present. Other indications include blackening of the water or black slime formed in the back of the toilet tank.

Customer Questions

ANSWER

The type of analysis you choose should be based upon your specific concerns, your water source and what contaminates may potentially be in the water. If you are on a city water supply, you may want to test for the by-products of disinfection and heavy metals as they are likely to be in the water. If you are on a private well it is important to test for bacteria as that is a common contaminant, as well as naturally occurring contaminants such as arsenic, radon, barium, iron and manganese.

ANSWER

Water quality can vary greatly based upon natural fluctuations in the water source and the types of treatment techniques utilized by the water department. If you are on a private well, there are no regulations which require regular testing of the water, so you are responsible for ensuring the water is safe to drink. The EPA recommends minimally testing your water at least once a year for bacteria and nitrates.

ANSWER

This will also depend on the type of analysis you choose, as some tests can be performed more quickly than others. We have several Quick Series packages in which results are available within 2-3 days of receipt at the laboratory. For our more comprehensive testing packages like the Well Check Deluxe it does take about 10-12 business days.

FAQs

ANSWER

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are naturally occurring microorganisms that feed on sulfur compounds such as sulfate, sulfite, and elemental sulfur. While they are not harmful to health, they produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which causes the familiar “rotten egg” odor in water. Testing with a sulfate reducing bacteria test kit helps confirm if these bacteria are the source of unpleasant smells or black slime in your plumbing.

ANSWER

Private well owners are most likely to encounter sulfate reducing bacteria, especially in areas with high sulfur or iron content in the groundwater. Homeowners noticing odor, discoloration, or black slime buildup should test their water to identify the cause.

ANSWER

This test analyzes your water for the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria only. The kit includes all the bottles and instructions needed for proper sample collection. Because the bacteria are sensitive to time and temperature, the sample must be returned to the lab via next-day shipping.

ANSWER

Testing is performed in our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory using EPA-approved microbiological methods for drinking water. Each sample is analyzed by trained professionals to ensure reliable and accurate results.

ANSWER

Although not a health threat, these bacteria can create strong odors, black stains, and slime buildup in plumbing, toilets, and fixtures. They can also corrode metal pipes over time, reducing system efficiency and water quality.

ANSWER

Treatment options include shock chlorination, continuous chlorination, or aeration systems that oxidize hydrogen sulfide. In some cases, specialized filtration can also be used. After treatment, retesting is recommended to confirm that the bacteria have been removed.

ANSWER

You should test annually if your well has a history of odor or slime issues, or after any well repairs, pump replacements, or flooding events that may introduce bacteria. Testing after any treatment ensures your system remains free of contamination.
